| Wildhorse Ranch Rescue Inc., Gilbert, AZ, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to saving horses from abuse, neglect, slaughter and premature death, is proud to announce that best-selling author Mim Eichler Rivas has donated to the organization signed copies of her book “Beautiful Jim Key: The Lost History of the World’s Smartest Horse.” The books will be used in Silent Auctions at WHRR events and proceeds will go to help horses in need.
“Beautiful Jim Key” is the true story of a remarkable horse at the turn of the 20th century who was able to read, write, do math, spell and even debate politics. This amazing horse was trained by Dr. William Key, a self-taught veterinarian, who was a former slave and veteran of the Civil War. Dr. Key taught Jim with kindness and patience, and together they traveled throughout the country where Jim performed in expositions to sold-out crowds. Through his work with Jim, Dr. Key was able to bring to light the idea and importance of humane acts of kindness to animals, while also breaking down barriers of prejudice.
Rivas’ research and exceptional telling of this long-lost story shows that Dr. Key was a forerunner of the humane and animal rights movement in the United States. Dr. Key helped break down barriers and helped to effect positive change with regard to the treatment of all animals.
“I know that if Beautiful Jim Key were alive today, he would spell the word ‘H-E-R-O-E-S’ as a way of describing the humans and horses who are part of Wildhorse Ranch Rescue,” said Rivas. “As Dr. William Key showed us by teaching Jim to spell and do math, through kindness and patience, the power of humane work can truly change the world. I am so proud to salute you,” she said.
“I read ‘Beautiful Jim Key’ and could not put down the book even though I did not want it to end. The story is amazing and Ms. Rivas is an extraordinary researcher and storyteller,” said Rhona Melsky, director at WHRR. “At Wildhorse Ranch Rescue we save any and all types of horses. Many of the ones we have saved were either abused or neglected in the past. We treat them with humane kindness, as did Dr. Key, so that they can live out the rest of their days in an environment where they are respected, loved, cared for and well fed. We are thrilled with and honored by Ms. Rivas’ generous donation of her autographed books.”
Rivas has worked as a co-author, collaborator and ghostwriter on more than 14 nonfiction books, including the New York Times best seller “Finding Fish” with Antwone Fisher, “Angels Along the Way” with Della Reese, and “Love Ellen” with Betty DeGeneres. She is co-author with Chris Gardner of “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Her book “Beautiful Jim Key” is soon to be a major motion picture.
